Enzyme Conversions
  • USP = United States Pharmacopeia
  • BP = British Pharmacopoeial
  • FIP = Fédération Internationale Pharmaceutique
  • PhEur = European Pharmacopoeia

Conversion from FIP/PhEur units to USP units as follows:

  • for lipase, 1 FIP/PhEur unit = 1 USP unit;
  • for amylase, 1 FIP/PhEur unit = 4.15 USP units;
  • for protease, 1 FIP/PhEur unit = 62.5 USP units
  • for lipase, 1BP/PhEur unit = 1 USP unit;
  • for amylase, 1 BP/PhEur unit = 4.15 USP units;
  • for protease, 1 BP/PhEur unit = 62.5 USP units

information taken from : http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3462091/  and they got THEIR information from  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3462091/#i1551-6776-12-2-115-b33  Also….. VERY IMPORTANT….. is that the enzyme potency amount required also depends on how the product is compounded and what format it is manufactured in. The type of enzyme product determines how quickly it will be used in the digestive system so consequently this determines how potent it needs to be.

The various type of enzyme products are:

powder,
granules,
enteric coated granules,
tablets,
capsules with enteric coated spheres

  • The units of the enzymes in enteric coated products (such as CREON) are vastly less – – then the powders/tablets due to the fact that the majority of the potency of enteric coated products reach the digestive system in it’s entirety, whereas powders/tablets potency can often be up to 70% destroyed by pH levels in the digestive tract- -before the enzymes can reach the small intestine.
  • On the flip side, the powders/tablets are better absorbed due to the size of the powder/dissolved tablet grains vs. the enteric coated pellets.
  • CREON (enteric coated pellets in capsules) are designed for human consumption and are processed to be effective in the human digestive system.  The pH level in the human digestive tract is approximately 4 where as the pH level in the canine digestive tract is approximately 1.  Because of this variance in pH levels, we as pet owners need to adjust the CREON administration timing technique to try and figure out how best to administer the CREON to our pets to achieve optimal digestion.

Chemeyes, LLC in the UK ( Canine enzyme products in the UK) http://www.chemeyes.co.uk/

The Chemeyes porcine pancreatic enzyme strength is as follows:

Lipase 20,000  BP units
Protease 1,400  BP units
Amylase 24,000  BP units

To further accommodate EPI customers, a running updated enzyme “certificate of analysis” will be posted on the Chemeyes website for each batch of enzymes.

Not only is this a good substitute for Tryplase, it also will interest those people in the UK that formerly used the Vet V powder and now use pancreatin powder. The powder is sold and pre-packed like Tryplase or as a powder.  The costs are as follows and they are significantly lower than the comparable products in the powder format:

Capsules

50 capsules  –  £ 16

100 capsules –  £ 18

250 capsules –  £ 42

500 capsules –  £ 78

Powder

50 grams – £ 12

250 grams – £ 40

500 grams – £ 85

1 kg – £ 150

5kg – £ 450

The pancreatin powder which appears to be the replacement for the Vet V powder is only 15,000 Lipase but costs out at 22p per gram whereas the 250 gram tub of Chemeyes costs in at 16p per gram on a stronger product.

The details of the Chemeyes product will now be included in the “Managing EPI in the UK” brochure which is included in the download section of this website.

 This powdered enzyme product can also be exported to the EU and India which will hopefully be another option for our fellow members.To contact Cameron or Suj directly, write to:   sales@chemeyes.co.uk
