Thinking about parasite preventions
Thinking about parasite preventions
as a tech i make sure my girl gets her monthly preventions. I was thinking the other day, i put them in her food with the enzymes. Shes doing great but i worry / wonder if she’s breaking those down to absorb them? Ive not seen any fleas or ticks and i live in the woods. I theory its fine , but anyone have any thoughts or insights on this?
diagnosed august 2018 with EPI. currently on 1/8 tsp tylan twice daily, 1/4 tsp prozyme twice daily, pancreatin x 6 1/2 tsp twice daily, Diamond naturals small breed adult and a vitamine b12 injection every 2 weeks
Re: Thinking about parasite preventions
I think that if what you are doing is working then don't change. Usually you don't incubate meds. I would toss it in before your pup eats or give after an enzymed meal.
My name is Jill and we live on the Hood Canal in Washington State. We currently have 2 Jack russells, TJ is 8 and Sadie is 2.
Mickey and his pancreatitis brought me to Epi4dogs.com site in 2012 to help manage it.
He lived from 6/99 - 8/2014
Mickey, Jack Russell. Chronic Pancreatitis. Dianes enzymes, 1/8t 3x/day with meals.

I give Nikki her Heartgard Plus and other meds after a meal and never a problem, she was diagnosed 8 years ago.

I always give Doc his heartworm med right before he eats his enzyme meal - we are going on 3 years and have never had an issue.
Madelon, owned by DOC. DOC dx EPI 5/2015 = TLI < .4, B12 406; Folate >24. DOC taught me so much and together we battled and overcame EPI, food sensitivies, environmental allergies but we lost the cancer battle. DOC was dx with hemangiosarcoma 5/2022 and crossed the rainbow bridge July 24, 2022. He is and always will be the love of my life, my soulmate, my heart dog.

Re: Thinking about parasite preventions
i have always given my dogs their meds after they eat a meal.
HOWEVER..... what i have learned is to not give all the maintenance meds on the same day... for example.... when i do tick and flea meds... i wait a few days before i administer the heartworm meds.........

Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........

Re: Thinking about parasite preventions
Good point Olesia - I forgot to mention that. I too separate the monthly meds - I give heartworm on the 1st of the month and flea/tick on the 15th.

Re: Thinking about parasite preventions
it makes sense to give them separately, as, if there is any type of reaction, you know which one it is that's causing the issue
we dont use heartworm meds over here very often

Re: Thinking about parasite preventions
I give Heartworm med right before Kolby eats his enzymed meal and we have not had any problems. I agree that it's a great idea to separate these meds from the flea and tick meds if you are giving them.
