Sounds like SID to me. If the poo is still bad in the next couple of days, that means slippery elm isn't going to do the trick. In that case you should really try & get your vet to write a prescription for Tylan. A 45 day course, with a little extra to wean from it. ---Pam

Appreciate all the responses! What an excellent community!
Update: I received the powder, Vet had to emergency order bc I ran out of tablets. Starting the Covetrus powder. William gets 1/2 cup of food, so from reading various threads on here... seems I coat that 1/2 cup wtih about 1-2 oz of water. Then mix in the enzymes, and let sit for 20 min... does that ratio seem about right?
I also read about making your own capsules on here. i will DEFINITELY be doing that asap as I travel often for work and I was stressing about whether a dog sitter or family member would be able to do all of this correctly. AND William and Dash race to their bowls at meal time. I cannot even walk near where their food is without being followed so then waiting 20 min would feel cruel LOL. I used to sit for an hour on sunday and cut pills and fill pill packets for one of my seniors (he passed a couple years ago). Looks like I'll pick back up this weekly ritual, only with capsule filling!

William is a rescue who I’ve had since he was 3. In April 2024, I was told he needed to lose weight (20lbs), fast forward to Oct 2024
[/img]And he lost 25pct body weight in 2 months and started eating all sorts of things he shouldn’t. Now navigating life of EPI. Not yet stable but in it to find his perfect “cocktail” w the support of this group.

Take your half cup food, 1/2 teaspoon enzyme and enough room temp water together and stir to cover kibble well with enzymes and water. Set timer for 20 mins. Stir before serving.

Re: Cavalier King Charles with EPI
Filling capsules is no joke. Maybe I’ll get better but I feel like I’m losing a bunch of enzymes in the filling process. I bought size 2 delayed release bc William is small.
Now I’m reading about Creon on this forum. Seems many have had success? How did you get your vet to prescribe? Mine said the human form isn’t used for pets. But he had to look that up and didn’t readily know.
Wondering if this might be the route? I tried incubating the powder directly in his food but he’s started throwing up and a lot
Of unexpected regurgitation.

Re: Cavalier King Charles with EPI
I'm on my 2nd dog on Creon. It definitely works. And it's easy easy!
First time around, I asked the vet about it. He did a quick search and said the medication app that vets use doesn't list it at all. Not just that it's not available; more like it doesn't exist. I mentioned there's thousands of dogs on it; In many countries, Creon is very literally the only option available. He asked for 48 hours to do some research, and decid from there. 2 days later, he gave me the first prescription.
Medizyme is supposed to be, and does appear to be very similar to Creon. But it's available without prescription, sold on Amazon in US. If you are in the US, Medizyme would be cheaper. Like Creon, it is teeny tiny pellets inside a capsule; so enzymes themselves are enteric coated.
When Rylee came around, I again asked for Creon. She looked it up and also thought it wasn't available here. Even if it is, there's no guarantee that it works well in dogs. I again explained that in most countries, it is their only option! Not to mention, I have experience with it from Chance. It did work very well for him, and it was the best of the enzymes I had tried! She asked me if I had pictures of the bottle with his name and dose info. I had happened to have his old prescription bottle with me, showed the name of the drug and the dose info on it. So she said since I had the experience with it, she would prescribed it. I've never looked back!

Chance was my 4 legged soul mate. My mobility assist service dog. Pure yellow Lab, 75 lbs. After struggling with weight all his life, finally dx with EPI. cTLI < 1, folate and B12 very low. Fed Raw. Maintained with Creon, Garden of Life probiotic and intermittent calcium bentonite clay. (Tylosin was a big nightmare for him)!
Rylee is Chance's successor; also pure Yellow/Fox red Lab. Started with symptoms at 8 weeks. At 6 months of age, also prescribed Creon due to suspected EPI (due to passing large amounts of undigested food). Currently suspected of blockages in pancreatic ducts. She is maintained VERY nicely on Creon and probiotics. Also raw fed.

Re: Cavalier King Charles with EPI
ditto to all that Andrea posted.
Yes, CREON is a human drug ... BUT ... it is the same enzymes that we use for dogs, only that the design of the capsule is made to activate in a digestive pH of 4 to 5 (human digestive pH level) where as a dog's digestive pH is around 1.... so this is why we sometimes have to try different techniques to administer it, like opening up the capsule, sprinkling the little pellets onto "moist" food (so the pellets have something to stick to and serving IMMEDIATELY. or... we give the capsule whole either a few minutes before, during or after a meal... it all depends on the individual dog. BUT as Andrea stated... in some countries around the work, there is no powdered enzymes for EPI dogs and they have to use CREON.
Or... just order Micrazym from Amazon without a prescription.....

Re: Cavalier King Charles with EPI
Thank you! I ordered the Micrazym from Amazon just now. Now just need to figure out dosing!
I give William 1/3 cup dry 3x day so was doing 1/3 tsp powdered enzymes. I may get better at encapsulation, but my table looked like a whole science experiment with a large portion of powder ending up everywhere but the capsule. Since it's so pricey, Ill make sure I make my way through it but would be magic if the micrazym works. The only downfall is William's insurance covers prescriptions thru the pharmacy but not supplements.
Any idea how much Micrazym to give him? I ordered the 10000.
After 2 days on the powdered enzymes, his poops are firm now (yay!) but kinda orange and yellow (not yay!)
Thanks again for all the guidance here!

Re: Cavalier King Charles with EPI
sine you are giving 1/3 cup of food..... and ordered the Micrazym 10,000.......My thought is to "start" with half capsule with each 1/3 cup of food... do for only 2 days and watch the poo closely.... if the poos go sloppy... then start giving 1 Micrazym 10,000 whole with every 1/3 cup meal.
Please keep us posted.
P.S. i suspect William will probably need the full capsules with every meal... but the only reason why i am suggesting starting with half is i personally tend to err on the side of caution... explaining this in case you want to go ahead and try giving the whole capsule....

I use one of these. Work over a piece of wax paper & you'll recover the enzymes that fall. Black Friday on Amazon also has a capsule filling kit with several tools for $7ish.
