Help I think my dog has epi
Re: Help I think my dog has epi
Sorry the little man is still in hospital! That's a very stressful time for sure.
Pantenex is a decent enzyme. As is Enzyme Diane. As is Lypex! Dose just needs to be less since Lypex enzymes are enteric coated. Powdered enzymes, such as Pantenex and Enzyme Diane, although very good, they are not enteric coated, soooo...more is needed. (Unless you are putting your Powdered enzymes in enteric coated capsules...then there's the coating, albeit in the capsule itself.
It's great they are going to be able to run the testing! That should help get you the answers you need. Hold off on giving any b12 for now, so when it is tested, you'll get an accurate representation as to where the numbers are right now!

Chance was my 4 legged soul mate. My mobility assist service dog. Pure yellow Lab, 75 lbs. After struggling with weight all his life, finally dx with EPI. cTLI < 1, folate and B12 very low. Fed Raw. Maintained with Creon, Garden of Life probiotic and intermittent calcium bentonite clay. (Tylosin was a big nightmare for him)!
Rylee is Chance's successor; also pure Yellow/Fox red Lab. Started with symptoms at 8 weeks. At 6 months of age, also prescribed Creon due to suspected EPI (due to passing large amounts of undigested food). Currently suspected of blockages in pancreatic ducts. She is maintained VERY nicely on Creon and probiotics. Also raw fed.

Thank you for answers
Before his hospitalization the vet said I have to take Lypex capsule off and pour half of it in his food for morning meal and afternoon meal. I don’t know if I pour enough enzyme in the food because he pooped 5-6 times a day. When he saw my brother’s dog, female Pomeranian. He pooped in front of her. I don’t know if it is a show off thing or he has upset digestive system. The vet give him 2 meals a day because they are very busy. I really want to give him 3 meals a day so I don’t have to give him 2 big meals but small meals 3 times a day to ease his digestive system.
I will make a journal of this and share it in Thai community. I don’t think many of dog owners in thailand knows about epi. It’s so sad to see dogs and cats suffer from epi every time I visit my dog in hospital. Thank you so much Epi community for giving me knowledge and supports about epi and pancreatitis. God blessed you all.

Re: Help I think my dog has epi
For Lypex, the enzymes themselves (ie: capsule contents) is enteric coated. So it's completely fine to sprinkle contents over food. And makes sense, especially when you aren't using a full pill. I do keep a bottle that holds some empty capsules (of the Creon I use). I will dump a small amount of a capsule into an "empty" to use for treats. Then it's easier to pill, and know I can give little treats for the next half hour or so. Especially handy for training classes, when sometimes trainers will be giving their treats too.
For powdered enzymes, the enzymes themselves are not enteric coated. So that's very different and dosed differently. But just to try to confuse things more, you can put powdered enzymes inside enteric coated capsules. In this case, the dose (in terms of enzyme numbers) is about the same; BUT because the coating is in the capsule itself, those must be pilled whole.
IF you do go to 3 meals a day, and the dog is OK on the current Lypex dose, then you should be able to use 1/3rd capsule per meal. (Assuming also that total food input is the same, just in smaller meals). That keeps your enzyme to food ratio the same. If pup isn't doing as well as hoped, then you may need to tweak doses. Sadly every dog has slightly different needs. So it's difficult for anyone to guess exactly what dose your dog would need. My dog is on a relatively higher dose of Creon than many. That may in part be because her food is fairly high in fat. You have to feed a very low fat diet, so your dose would likely be lower than mine.
I hope I didn't confuse you more. If so, bark at me, and I'll try to clarify anything you find a little "muddy" lol

Re: Help I think my dog has epi
Hi an update. His test result is back. He doesn’t have Epi but have 42 in bun. Everything looks normal except his gallbladder level is abnormal.
His vitamin b12 is 423. His canine tli is >50. I’m waiting for his supplement from U.S. I’m just happy that now he can come home and spend every night with me. I still take him to vet every day for check up. Hopefully he gets better!! He still pooped 3-4 times during his walk. Vet said that he must be happy and excited and it could be his personality. Thank everyone!l He is old but still kicking it.

Re: Help I think my dog has epi
What a beauty. So glad it is not Epi. Does he have sludge in the gall bladder or an obstructed bile duct? Did the vet prescribe Ursodiol?

Re: Help I think my dog has epi
Awww. Sorry to hear that the little man has a gallbladder issue. That can be painful, and kinda scary.
With a TLI of over 50, it's quite possible the pancreatitis is still active.
I think Jill might be one of your biggest assets here, as she's dealt with chronic pancreatitis with her Mickey.

Re: Help I think my dog has epi
Hello guys thank you for answers
I think the vet gave him the medicine for his gallbladder. The name starts with U…..and I think it is the same medicine. I take him to the vet at 8 am everyday so the vet can feed him water food and medicine. I pick him up at 5:00 pm. I tell him every morning it’s time to go to school LoL.
I still have a hard time feeding him water. Now I will try the water fountain. He still takes anti biotic, Lypex, pre biotic-probiotic and samylin. I want to give him omegas 3 because I heard it’s good for anti inflammation. The vet said wait until he seems more stable. He is still happy and active. He seem to be comfortable moving to Chiang Mai and sleep a lot because of his age. The vet in thailand is more affordable than U.S. so it doesn’t cost me an arm or leg. I kept diary of his stool and now my phone is full of his stool. His stool is quite solid and in shape now. Will keep you guys updated. Thank you!! Have a nice day

Re: Help I think my dog has epi
I understand the apprehension to giving omegas (ie fats) to a dog with pancreatitis. But there's some evidence to say it's helpful, as you have indicated. But you need to ensure the omegas are in the EPA/DHA form already (ie: fish based, rather than plant based).
Here's one study done on fish oils for acute pancreatitis (AP).

Hi Nat, Chance gave a great link on the study with Omegas for pancreatitis. I have always used powdered Omegas.
Omega-3 Fish Oil for Dogs by Pawsomely Healthy - High in EPA, DHA - Allergies, Itching, Shedding - Supports Immune System, Skin, Coat, Heart, Joints - 90 Powder Capsules https://a.co/d/6tL78pX
The things that brought Mickeys Tli from >50 to a normal<25 was powdered enzymes and the use of Tylan twice daily to get SIBO under control. Even so his cPl remained >1000. He was on low dose Tramadol for pain.

Re: Help I think my dog has epi
Hi Jill and chance and everyone
Thank you for answering!!
Thank for the product I am going to order this for my dog. My vet is going to do his blood test on 20 October. I hope my little man is ok and doesn’t need to be hospitalized again. You did a great job lowering tli<25. I don’t know whether my vet use tylan but they still use antibiotic. Is tylan a liquid medicine? I take my dog on a walk everyday in the morning and afternoon. He is still super happy and active during his walk. Sometime I heard his stomach gurgling. Is this normal? I use royal canine low fat now and want to switch to hill chicken vegetable stew low fat cos it is more moisture. My vet feed him 2 times a day.
Will see how it goes
Ps I am still waiting for his supplement from Us.
