Capsule question

Post by Curtis » 29 Oct 2024, 15:11

Good afternoon all,

My pup is having issues with excess stomach acid thus reducing the effectiveness of the enzymes. My vet has suggested trying to use capsules to bypass the stomach acid and after some reading here I see that is quite easy to do but I do have a question on the amounts.

The info here says "If two “00” or “0” enteric coated capsules are filled 3/4 of the way (equaling the effectiveness of 1 tsp of powdered enzymes) you will still have approximately 5/8 tsp (1/2 tsp + 1/8 tsp) left over enzymes from that 1 tsp of enzymes."

I was able to source delayed release 00 size capsules ( I know enteric coated if preferred but i could not source those here in Canada - hope they are similar?) I am confused by the above statement as to how many capsules and what quantity equals 1 teaspoon of enzymes? Using two 00 size each filled 3/4 way = 1 tsp?

Thanks in advance everyone.

The way I read it is 2-00s or 1-0 3/4 full.

That's the way I read it too but it doesn't make sense as a 00 size capsule is a bigger capsule than a 0?

Capsule Sizing Information:

"000" holds about 1000 mg., "00" holds about 735 mg., "0" size holds about 500 mg., #1 holds about 400 mg., #3 about 200 mg. One teaspoon will fill about 7 "0" capsules and about 5 "00" capsules.

Delayed release IS Enteric coated. So you're good there. For Rylee, I found that two 00 capsules packed in of Enzyme Diane 8x was a perfect dose per meal. That's packed in tight, so I needed to get the little capsule filling tools to pack it in

I feed a fairly high fat diet. If your dog's fat intake is lower, then you'd likely be able to get away with a little less enzymes. Using too much enzymes will increase acid reflux issues...but Rylee taught me that too little can also cause it!
Chance was my 4 legged soul mate. My mobility assist service dog. Pure yellow Lab, 75 lbs. After struggling with weight all his life, finally dx with EPI. cTLI < 1, folate and B12 very low. Fed Raw. Maintained with Creon, Garden of Life probiotic and intermittent calcium bentonite clay. (Tylosin was a big nightmare for him)!

Rylee is Chance's successor; also pure Yellow/Fox red Lab. Started with symptoms at 8 weeks. At 6 months of age, also prescribed Creon due to suspected EPI (due to passing large amounts of undigested food). Currently suspected of blockages in pancreatic ducts. She is maintained VERY nicely on Creon and probiotics. Also raw fed.

Thank you. I currently use 1 tsp Enzyme Diane 6x per cup of food and my understanding is that by using capsules instead of the incubating method the guideline is to use about half as much enzymes ( that should equate closely to two 00 capsules packed full ).

I am hopeful this works for my pup not only for her well being but the cost savings and no longer having the hassle of incubating the enzymes.

Hey there! I totally get your confusion—it can be tricky figuring out the right amounts for capsules. When I had my dog on enzyme supplements, I found that filling two "00" capsules about 3/4 full usually gave me close to 1 teaspoon of powdered enzymes, just like what you're seeing. I ended up using delayed-release capsules too, and they worked out fine for my pup.
