Maddie needs blood test and I can't find what tests need to be run.

Post by sapresley » 23 Jan 2022, 22:41

I am taking my EPI fur baby to the vet tomorrow and have been searching this site for the blood tests that need to be run on her to find out what's going on with her and can't find what I'm looking for. Probably would bite me if it was a snake, but I can't find it! We are here in Louisiana going on three 3 now and no blood tests have been done and her burbs are not healthy smelling in the sense that food isn't being digested well. The poop I was able to see was grayish and slightly slimy looking. Maddie is reverting to getting hungry more often again. So I feel like blood work needs to be done and I need the whole list of work that they need to do since I need to be specific with a general vet. He knows of the disease, but I feel I need the complete list of all tests to find out what is going on with this 14-20 year old fur baby. Her only signs of old age are grumpiness and losing hair on her back legs. Her burps though are rancid smelling. I walk in the house and can smell the smell.
Can anyone send me the link to the tests?
Thanks
Sherry

Hi Sherry,
The tests are cTli, Cobalamin(B12) and Folate.
The cTli is fasted.

Jill,
Thanks for replying so quickly! Too bad we never got to meet when I lived in WA state! I'm hoping for some answers to the blood tests. Thanks again. Will try to notify with results.

Hi Sherry, and welcome to you & Maddie.

To reiterate what Jill said, Maddie needs to fast overnight before the test. It can be pricey, so if she didn't fast, and if you haven't done it, I'd postpone till tomorrow. If the blood was drawn, you could call & tell them not to send it.

The poop sure sounds like EPI, and the burps go along with the accompanying SID.

Good luck, and stay in touch.---Pam
Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

Hi, Sherry. I'm also living in Louisiana.

I just want to clarify that the tests people have told you to get (TLI, cobalamin, and folate) are tests that are needed for the initial diagnosis of EPI. I think Maddie has been diagnosed for quite some time, right? If so, those tests don't need to be repeated.

From what you described, it sounds like SID has gotten out of control. Could you please tell us what you are feeding, how much enzymes per cup of food, and any other meds or supplements you are giving? That will help us give suggestions about what needs to be done.

just a heads up, its food fasted only for 12 hours, so its as well to get an appointment early moning and not towards the weekend as the samples go to a lab they need to be as freash as can be

the website says 8-12 hours food fasted but we prefer to err on the longer time

if you repeat the cTLI test the food fasting is 12-15 hours, and that is insisted upon by the laboratory
